I do agree with it not usually being the case. But thats what friends are for. I believe some girls care most about the character and attitude of their girlfriends than her attractiveness. But one can also look at it from a different prospective, some women befriend unattractive or lack of a better word, ugly female friends to make themselves look more attractive.
